Hi all,
Fettled my 20plus this Christmas, gave it the works... New LX7 oil (bearing cleaned, 5 drops of new), adjusted the sub-plinth to be level with the top plinth, raised the arm a bit, re-mounted the cartridge according to Baerwald, cleaned the belt. After placement on the platform level was checked.
But during the last week I have noticed some speed instability, i.e. wow & flutter. It is mostly notable when playing piano and the likes.
The only thing I forgot was to clean the sub-platter where the belt runs. Could that be it? What else could it be, if not that?

cleaning might cure it. alcohol , and the belt too with wax based cleaner. Speed control unit maybe, or incorrect cartridge alignment/tracking force too high/bias.
take outer platter off and turn upside down back on sub platter. observe the belt and see what happens, juddering motor etc? i hope you find out. and let us know.

Got on with the fettling during the week, cleaning the belt again (furniture polish, wax based), and this time I also remembered to clean both pulley and subplatter with isopropyl alcohol. Checked how the belt runs on the subplatter - a little down from the middle, seemed stable. Also bettered the levelling a bit.
Then checked how it ran with a Cardas test record using the stroboscope markings - it runs absolutely precise! Both without cartridge in the groove, with, and even with the carbon arm brush, so the DS1.5 must monitor the speed - nice.
And it worked... I don't know exactly what did it, but now the problem seems to be gone.
It was both detected and controlled afterwards using records from my Kate Bush This Woman's Work, which was a very nice revisit |
