... When the original Xerxes appeared, it caused quite a stir, in part because it included some obviously clever and original ideas".

I intend to return to this excellent record player soon in order to try out some of the upgrade options. The Xerxes20/Artemiz2 has very little in common with the Radius5/Nima. Rather it's a superb record player capable of some of the best results from vinyl that this reviewer has heard to date”.

"The Roksan Xerxes.20 looks a treat in lush piano rosewood - and the finish isn't where the musical association stops: this deck simply adores a tune...Fast, dynamic and rhythmic sound; excellent build."

Xerxes20plus
Xerxes.20plus Record Player

The original Xerxes launched in 1985 was one of the most important turntables of the eighties. With advanced engineering techniques and radical solutions to address the inherent problems suffered by other turntables, the Xerxes offered a more enjoyable and accurate presentation of music.

Xerxes.20plus is the result of over 20 years of research and development and refinement of the Xerxes.20 based on Roksan's most advanced record player, the TMS 3.

The elegance in engineering is visible through the compact clean lines and robust construction of the Xerxes.20plus's three plinths and triple layer isolation system. The hardened tool steel spindle, the tungsten carbide ball and the two-piece solid phosphor bronze housing, which is machined to an accuracy of 5 microns, provide the unique self centering, self aligning true single point main bearing.

The arm board/cut-out (which solves the inherent problems of a sprung sub-chassis and mass loaded designs) is isolated and removable improving performance and aiding set up with minimal maintenance.

The top plinth prevents any residual moror vibration from reaching the record/cartridge interface. The sub-plinth which supports the main bearing/platter assembly and the tonearm, decouples the stylus/groove interface and isolates it from external disturbances. The detachable armboard machined from a billet of acetal provides a further level of isolation with complimentary coupling between the tonearm and the sub-plinth.

The Xerxes.20plus can be fitted with any of Roksan's three arms or any other high quality arm to offer a powerful and expansive sound displaying a fine midband, a fast and deep bass and a very smooth and open treble. Musicians are firmly located within the soundstage, with the tempo and musicality combined to create a compelling sense of live music being played.

Utilised in the Xerxes.20plus are TMS 3's main Bearing Ball, Inner and Outer Platter design that are refined to ensure the record remains almost undisturbed by the internally induced vibrations. This provides the cartridge with an almost silent passage to retrieve the vital audio information. The combination of the Plinth material, density, linear damping, vibration absorbing weight blocks, lowered decoupling frequency and controlled harmonic structure delivers a performance second to none.

Speed Control

DX2 Refernce Speed Control
DX2 Standard Speed
Control

Caspian system DX2 turntable speed control for this record playing system, uses the same motor drive PCB as that of the TMS 3 reference record player. The DX2 utilises a massive 350 VA ultra low noise internally and externally shielded Toroidal transformer that feeds the DS1.5 or the smaller DSU internal DC power supply for the motor drive. The DX2 is a modular system and can be configured to include the Artaxerxes.X phono stage.

Built in the Caspian M series chassis, the Xerxes speed control uses the TMS2 motor control board and is offered with two options, the state of the art power supply DS1.5 or the smaller power supply, the DSU.

The speed control box is fitted with a high quality mains inlet filter and matches the rest of the Caspian system. This unit is designed to allow the addition of the Roksan phono stage and its DC power module within the same box.

XPS 7

The XPS.7 is the basic Xerxes motor drive from Roksan. It utilises similar circuitry to the other XPS motor drives and offers fantastic value as a starter power supply for the Xerxes.20plus or an upgrade for the older model XPSI, II, III and XPS3.5. It is important to note that the XPS.7 comes with the standard 5-pin connector for use with Xerxes.X, Xerxes.20, and Xerxes.20plus; it should be converted to 4-pin connector for use with the original Xerxes record player. The XPS.7 can also be used as an upgrade with the Radius and Radius 3, however this requires modification to the Radius.
